“To Damascus” (1903) – Valery Briusov

1903

To Damascus

My lips approaching
Your lips,
Mysteries happening again,
And the world like a temple.

We, like priests,
Create the rite.
Sternly in the great abode,
Words resound.

Angels, falling prostrate,
Sing the troparion.
The stars — sanctuary lamps alight,
And the night — an altar.

What draws us to the inevitable,
As steel is drawn to a magnet?
We breathe lust and tenderness,
But the sight is shut.

We are captives in the swirl
Of last caresses.
There it is, by the century appointed,
Our way to Damascus!

“The Lady Friends” (1895) – Valery Briusov

The Lady Friends

Three women, dirty, drunk,
Embracing one another, walk along and stagger.
The misty belfries tremble,
The crosses on the churches bow down.

Having heard their incoherent speech,
Resembling hoarse songs,
The idle cab-drivers laugh,
And passers-by rudely step to one side.

They walk along, dirty, drunk,
Sing their songs, swear…
And sadly the fog-bound churches
Bow down their crosses before them.

Translated by Graeme Davis

The Girl-Friends

Three women – drunk, staggering, muddy –
Supporting each other, they go.
The belfries in murkiness shudder,
The crosses on churches tilt low.

When heard their talk, mixed and crazy,
That sounds like song, high and hoarse,
They giggle – the coachmen, lazy,
They pass by – the passers-by, coarse.

They, dressed into rough, dirty gowsn,
Sing songs and cry out the curses…
The cloudy churches just mourn
And bow to them with the crosses.

Translated by Yevgeny Bonver

“Children of the Night” (1893) – Dmitri Merezhkovsky

1893

“Children of the Night”

Riveting our eyes
On the blanching east,
Children of sorrow, children of night,
We wait, to see if our prophet shall come.
We are scenting out the unseen
And, with hope in our hearts,
Dying, we grieve
Over uncreated worlds.
Our speech is daring,
But condemned to die
Are the too early precursors
Of a too tardy spring.
Resurrections of the buried
And the rooster’s song
In the middle of the deep night,
Morning’s cold – they are us.
We are the steps above the abyss,
Children of murk, awaiting the sun:
Once we see the light, as shadows,
We shall perish in its rays.

“The Backbone Flute” (1915) – Vladimir Mayakovsky

To all of you
I like or have liked,
kept safe by the icons in the cave of your soul,
like a goblet of wine in a festive toast,
I raise my skull, brimming with verse.

More and more often I think –
wouldn’t it be better to place
the period of a bullet at my end?
Tonight,
just in case,
I’m giving a farewell concert.

Memory!
Assemble in the great hall of my brain
inexhaustible rows of beloveds.
Pour laughter from eye to eye.
Deck the night in bygone weddings.
Pour joy from body to body.
Let this night be forgotten by no one.
Tonight I will be playing the flute.
On my own backbone.

1

I crumple miles of streets with the sweep of my paces.
Where can I go, melting this hell!
In the mind of what divine Hoffmann
Were you dreamt up, cursed woman?!

The streets are too narrow for this happy storm.
The holiday keeps ladling out well-dressed people.
I’m thinking.
Thoughts, clots of blood,
Sick and coagulated, crawl out of my skull.

I,
The wonderworker of everything festive,
Myself have no one with whom to attend the festival.
Right now I’ll up and fall flat on my back
And bash out my brains on the stone of Nevsky!
I went and blasphemed.
Screamed that there is no God,
But God took such a woman from the depths of hell
That before her a mountain would get nervous and tremble,
He dragged her out and commanded:
Love!

God is pleased.
On a steep slope beneath heaven,
A worn-out man went wild and died.
God rubs the palms of his little hands together.
God is thinking:
Just you wait, Vladimir!
It was he, of course it was he –
To keep me from guessing who you really were –
Who thought to give you a real husband
And to place human sheet music on your piano.
If I could suddenly steal up to your bedroom door,
And make the sign of the cross on the quilt above you,
I know –
The smell of burning fur would fill the air,
And the flesh of the devil would give out sulfurous smoke.
But instead, until early morning,
Horrified that someone had taken you away to love,
I rushed around
And engraved my cries into verse lines,
A jeweler gone already half mad.
I should play some cards!
Rinse the throat
Of my moaned-out heart with wine.

I don’t need you!
Don’t want you!
All the same
I know:
I’ll soon kick the bucket.

If it’s true that you exist,
God,
My God,
If the carpet of stars was woven by you,
If this pain,
Daily multiplied,
Is a torture sent down by you, O Lord,
Then put on your judge’s chain.
Await my visit.
I’m a punctual guy;
I won’t delay a single day.
Listen up,
Most High Inquisitor!

I’ll shut my mouth.
Not a single cry
Will I let escape from my bitten-up lips.
Tie me to comets, like to horses’ tails,
And race me out of here,
Ripping me up on star bits.
Or here’s what:
When my soul moves out,
Frowning like a little idiot,
And exits to meet your judgment,
You
Can put a gallows up over the Milky Way:
Take me and string me up like a criminal.
Do what you want.
You could even quarter me.
I myself, as a righteous man, will wash your hands of it.
Only –
Hear this! –
Take away that cursed one,
The one you made my beloved!

I crumple miles of streets with the sweep of my paces.
Where am I to go, melting this hell!
In the mind of what divine Hoffmann
Were you dreamt, up, cursed woman?!

2

Both the sky
That’s forgotten it’s blue, with all the smoke,
And the clouds like flayed refugees,
I’ll blast with the dawn of my final love,
Bright like a consumptive’s blush.

With joy I’ll drown out the roar
Of the horde
Of those who have forgotten home and comfort.
People,
Listen up!
Climb out of the trenches.
You can finish your fighting later.

Even if, staggering off blood like Bacchus,
A drunken battle is raging –
Even then, the words of love aren’t defunct.
Dear Germans!
I know,
On your lips is
Goethe’s Gretchen.

The Frenchman
Dies happy on a bayonet,
And the shot-down aviator
Crashes with a smile,
If only they remember
The kiss of your mouth,
Traviata.

But I’m in no mood for the rosy pulp
Chewed up by centuries.
Lie down today at new feet!
You I sing,
My painted
Redhead.

Perhaps of these days,
Frightful as bayonet blades,
Once the centuries have bleached my beard,
You and I will be all
That remains,
And I
Will chase you from city to city.
You’ll be given away in marriage across the sea,
Trying to hide in night’s burrow –
I’ll kiss into you through the London fog
With the fiery lips of streetlamps.

In the heat of the desert you’ll stretch out your caravans,
With lions standing guard –
Beneath you
Under the windblown sand,
I’ll place my burning Sahara cheek.

You’ll deposit a smile in your lips
As you watch –
The toreador is so handsome!
And suddenly I’ll
Fling my jealousy into the stands
Through the dying eye of the bull.

If you should point your absentminded steps to a bridge
and think
How nice it would be to jump down –
It is I,
The Seine poured out underneath,
Who will call to you,
Baring my rotten teeth.

If with another, you light up with horse-hoof fire
The Strelka or the Sokolniki,
Then I, clambering way up above,
Patient and naked, will torment you with moonlight.

I’m strong,
And soon they’ll need me –
They’ll command:
Kill yourself in the war!
My last word will be
Your name,
Clotted on my shrapnel-shredded lips.

Will they give me a crown?
Or send me to Saint Helena?
I who have saddled the cloudbanks of life’s storm
Am an equal candidate
For tsar of the universe
And
The shackles.

If it’s determined that I should be tsar,
Then your dear little face
On the sunny gold of my coins
I’ll order my people
To stamp!
But if I wind up
Where the world fades into tundra,
Where the river trades with the north wind,
Then I’ll scratch the name Lily onto my chains
And kiss them blind in the dark of the prison camp.

Listen up, you who’ve forgotten the sky’s blue,
Bristling all over
Like animals!
This may very well be
The last love in the world,
Lit up bright by a consumptive’s blush.

3

I’ll forget the year, the day, the date.
I’ll lock myself up alone with a sheet of paper.
Come into creation, inhuman magic
Of suffering-illuminated words!

Today, the moment I came in to see you,
I felt it –
Something was wrong in the house.
You were hiding something in your silk dress,
And the smell of incense spread through the air.
Happy to see me?
In response, a cold
“Very.”
The fence of reason is knocked down by confusion.
Burning and feverish, I pile up despair.

Listen here,
All the same
You can’t hide the body.
Let the terrible word crash down on my head!
All the same
Your every muscle,
As if in a megaphone,
Trumpets:
She’s dead, dead, dead!
No,
Answer me.
Don’t lie!
(How can I go back now, in my state?)
Like two graves
Your eyes have sunken into your face.
The graves grown deeper.
There is no bottom.
It seems
I might fall from the scaffold of days.
I stretched my soul over the abyss like a tightrope,
And I totter there, juggling words.

I know
His love has worn you out.
I can read your boredom in so many signs.
Make yourself young again in my soul.
Acquaint your heart with the holiday of the body.

I know,
Everyone pays for a woman.
That’ll be fine
If for the moment,
Instead of chic Paris dresses,
I can clothe you in tobacco smoke.
My love,
Like an apostle in days of yore,
I’ll carry down a thousand thousand roads.
For you in the ages a crown has been forged,
And in that crown are my words,
In a rainbow of convulsions.

Just as elephants, with their hundred-pound games,
Sealed Pyrrhus’s victory,
I thundered out your brain with the tread of a genius.
All in vain.
I can’t tear you away.

Rejoice,
Rejoice!
You’ve finished me off!
Now
My anguish is such
That I can only run to the canal
And shove my head into the water’s bared teeth.

You gave me your lips.
How crude you were with them.
I touched them and went cold,
It was as if I were kissing, with my penitent lips,
A monastery carved from a frozen clif.

The doors
Slammed open.
He walked in,
Splashed by the streets’ merriment.
I
Split in two, as it were, in my howl.
Yelled at him:
“Fine!
I’ll go!
Fine!
She’ll stay.
You can sew rags on her,
And her timid wings will fatten up in silk.
Watch out or she’ll float away.
For a stone to weigh her down,
You can hang pearls around your wife’s neck.”

Oh, what a
Night!
I myself pulled the despair tighter and tighter.
From my cries and my laughter
The room screwed up its ugly face in terror.

And like a vision, the image borne away from you rose,
Your eyes shining down on the carpet,
As if some new Bialik had dreamt up
A blinding Queen of Hebrew Zion.

In torment
Before the one I’d given up,
I, the kneeler, sank.
King Albert,
Surrendering
All his cities,
Was a birthday boy, compared to me.

Shine golden in the sun, you flowers and grasses!
Be springlike, lives of all the elements!
I only ask for poison –
To drink and drink in verse.

You who robbed my heart,
Leaving it with nothing,
Who tortured my soul into delirium,
Accept this gift, my dear –
I may never come up with anything more.

Paint today’s date like a holiday.
Come into creation,
Magic equal to the Crucifixion.
You see,
I am nailed with words
To the paper.

“Being Good to Horses” (1918) – Vladimir Mayakovsky

Hooves were pounding.
As if singing:
“Grip.
Grab.
Grope.
Group.”

Wind-drunk,
ice-shod,
the street slipped and slid.
Onto its croup
the horse fell with a crash,
and straightaway
gawker after gawker –
came to Kuznetsky to bell-bottom along –
crowded round.
Laughter jingled and jangled:
“The horse fell!”
“A horse fell!”
Kuznetsky laughed.
I alone
withheld my voice from the general howl.
I approached
and saw
the horse’s eyes…

The street tipped over,
Kept flowing along…
I approached and saw
drop after drop, enormous drops,
roll down the snout,
disappear in the fur…

And some sort of universal
animal yearning
splashed out of me
and spread in a rustle.
“Horse, please don’t.
Horse, listen to me –
you think this means you’re somehow worse?
Kiddo,
we’re all horses a little bit,
each of us in his own way a horse.”
Perhaps,
being old,
she had no need for a nanny,
or perhaps my idea struck her as coarse,
only
the horse
jerked herself up,
found her footing,
gave a neigh
and was off.
Wagging her tail.
A chestnut child.
She arrived cheerful,
took her place in the stall.
And all the while it seemed to her –
she was a young foal,
and it was worthwhile to live
and worthwhile to work.

“Could You?” (1913) – Vladimir Mayakovsky

плеснувши краску из стакана;

I splattered the pattern of weekdays at once
with color splashed out from a glass;
I showed you, on a dish of aspic,
the slanting cheekbones of the ocean.
Upon the scales of a tin fish
I read the calls of new lips.
And how about you,
could you
play a nocturne
on a flute of drainpipes?

“The Dump” (1983) – Elena Shvarts

O glorious dump, how shall I sing your praise!
You lie in the flickering sunset, sprawling, disheveled;
A black cat, immaculate in evening dress,
Tweaks at your swelling paunch, deft as a pianist.
The rotting and shattered glass of mirrors
Enclose a wormwood’s straggling roots;
You are as grand as Venice (No, far grander!)
The cat is your gondolier, and sings a serenade.
The ruined wreck of an ottoman
Lies cramped in a pool of lilac shade,
Whispering tales of hookahs by the Golden Horn
To lionizing clumps of willowherb.
July bobs to admire its face in shards of glass.
A crow dives slowly, then plumps down,
And struts upon you, stately as Sulla,
Holding doom, or mercy, gripped in each claw.
You’re peaches’ slimy shreds, an berries’ slippery bubbles,
Lost lenses, torn book-covers, broken medals;
Your skin is leprous; you’re pink and blistered
As a child inundated in scalding soup.
You’re Dionysus ritually dismembered,
You’re a microcosm in a make-up mirror.
But I saw this to you: shake your sleepy limbs,
Get up on your feet, and walk. An then,
You monster, incubus of night,
Open your tattered mouth and speak.
O glorious dump, shake out your limbs and walk!
Sing of the days spent lying in the sun,
Your body warm, your giant’s brain crackling, burning,
Yet unifying all that you survey.
May great thoughts bloom and rot in you
As you feast on vodka droplets, chicken bones.
O glorious dump, get to your feet and sing!
O Rosa mystica, the gods must hear your voice

“Fifth Stanzas. De Arte Poetica” – Olga Sedakova

De arte poetica»

1

A great thing is a refuge for itself,
A broad deep pond or Trappist’s far-off cell,
A mythic fish that swims the hidden depths,
A righteous man, reading his Book of Hours
Concerning the day that has no evening;
A vessel holding its own beauty in.

2

And as the ocean swims inside a shell –
A valve in the heart of time, a trap as well,
Walking on velvet paws, a marvel in a bag,
A treasure hidden in a sleeping draught,
So in my mind, inside this creaking house,
She goes, and holds her magic lantern up…

3

But tell me, don’t you think the verse above
Is crammed too full? All right, it’s well enough
For one who feels the pull, outside his dreams,
Of images aslant with silvery gleams,
Carrying us pointed fins to where
We and all we have known are dust, no more.

4

The light (for let me note in brackets this)
Is something we might call a mystery,
Speaking at will of God knows what,
Whilst speech, like a sunbeam’s dancing motes,
Spins slowly as the eddied fragments spin
But means – the transparency of things.

5

A great thing is a refuge for itself,
A place where beasts can leap and the birds peck
Music for food. But panting on the heels
Of day comes night. And he who sees it fall
Puts down his work, soon as the stars appear
With their magnetic pull, and ready tears.
6

It’s odd how old one’s eyes have got!
For they see only what they can’t,
And nothing else. Even so from one’s hands,
Sometimes, a cup may fall. My friend!
What we have kept, like life, will slide away,
And the unknown will rise like a star in the sky.

7

Poems, it seems to me, are grown for all,
As Serbian nut-trees grow along the walls
Of monasteries, that keep a scoop of honey,
A well, with stars floating like ice in springtime,
So for a moment someone in the world
Sees fragile life, like the spring stars that whirl:

8

– O, that is all: I knew that I was doomed,
And that my reason cried for lack of food;
Trapped like a mouse in chilly vaults, it pined;
I knew no one felt pity for a friend, –
All is in flight, and all is drunk on joy,
For “things must pass,” as Horace used to say…

9

Why hurry, life, why chivy on the hour?
You’ll soon have time to sew my mouth right up,
Stitching with iron threads. So humor me,
Deign, then, to give my sentential a try,
“A great thing is a refuge for itself”:
It will sing when singing us to rest.

10

– they say, most beautifully. Now
at noontide, beauty’s night-time door
is open wide, and high up in the hills
the constellatory fire, both monk and angel,
reads by the light of its own candle-ends
the exemplary lives of guilty men.

11

A great thing is a loss to end all loss:
A Mediolanian glimpse of paradise;
Its hearing is attuned; on the tuned string
Fear strums away; dust is an animate thing,
And like a flame-drawn butterfly, it cries,
“I will not be the thing that I will be!”
12

The future rolls into the spacious house,
The secret cistern, forcing its way at last…

“Epistle I: On the Russian Language” (1747) – Alexander Sumarokov

Among mankind’s blessings is our ability to understand one another better than beasts, and with the help of the words of a rich language we can explain everything, no matter how profound the thought. We describe everything, our feelings and our passions, and by means of our voice we divide our thoughts into small parts.

Какими говорят мордва и вотяки;

Having received this precious gift from out bountiful Creator, we can penetrate the hearts of others through the imagination. What we understand we communicate to one another and leave in writing to our descendants. But such languages as spoken by the Mordvinians and Votiaks are of less advantage. We must have the kind of language the ancient Greeks had, the kind the Romans had, and, following them in this, the kind now spoken in Italy and Rome, the kind as beautiful as French became in the past century or, finally, the kind Russian is capable of being!

Our language has sufficient words in it, but there is not a sufficient number of writers in it. One, for no reason at all, draws the Russian Pallas to Germany and, thinking that this way he is bringing pleasure to it, deprives it of its natural beauty. Another, never having learned to read and write as one should, believes that it is impossible to say everything in Russian, and, taking quantities of foreign words, weaves discourse in his own personal language that is worthy only of being burned. Or he transposes word for word into Russian what no longer resembles itself in its new garb. Another strives for the heavens in wretched prose and himself does not understand his own talent. Another creeps there in prose and verse, and these mutually abusive writings he gives to other scribblers as principles. Although he knows that everyone laughs at him in return, he does not wish, however, to see his own nonsense. “Let nobody,” he thinks, “praise me. This does not grieve my heart in the slightest. I praise myself. Why then o I need the praise of others? And I do know that I am very clever.” Very, very, very clever, my little friend, I do not wish to dispute it. It is just that your style is abominable. If you don’t believe me, then ask anyone. They will tell you that it is a sin for you to wield a pen. But is that all? It is impossible even to think that I could recount all the stupidities of scribblers.

И прежде самому себе подать в том свет;

Whoever writes should first refine his thought, but before that he himself has to know what it is he wants to say. But many scribblers give no thought to this, content only with the fact that they are putting words together. Uncomprehending readers, although they do not understand them, wonder at them and think there must be something mysterious here. Their minds covered over, they read in darkness and accept the writer’s indistinct composition as something beautiful.

There is no mystery at all in writing senselessly. Art means being able to compose one’s style correctly, in the artist’s expressing his thought clearly, in one’s words flowing freely and harmoniously.

A letter, which the folk call  “scrawling,” conducts ordinary discourse with those absent and should be without artifice and briefly composed, or in other words, as simple as we speak. But whoever has not been taught to speak correctly cannot compose even such a “scrawling” without difficulty. Words that are in use in society, whether expressed by pen or tongue, should be more elegantly composed. They should also embody literary embellishments that although unusual in simple words are necessary and appropriate to the seriousness of discourse employed for the explanation of a decision or feelings in order to enter people’s hearts this way and move them.

Не мни, переводя, что склад в творце готов;

Bountiful nature shows us the road in this, and reading opens the door to art. Now I shall say what translation is praiseworthy. Each nation expresses itself differently. What is very good in the French language can prove totally wretched in Russian. When you translate, do not think that the form is ready in the artist. The artist grants the thought, but he does not grant the words. Do not mix into the construction of his phrases; embellish your work with words peculiar to your own tongue. Why follow him step by step? Just take the same general path and give your mind free reign. You are not renowned by what you do as the original artist with his own writing. But catch up to him and you will be equal to him.

Которую никто не отгадает ввек;

Although you have a dictionary three puds in weight before you, do not think that it will be of great assistance to you if you set down phrases and words without any order. For your translation will be some kind of puzzle that nobody will ever solve. Then it will be in vain that you transposed all the words precisely.

If you wish to translate faultlessly, do not proceed that way – but reveal to me faithfully the spirit and power of the original artists. Our language is sweet, pure, luxurious, and rich, but we introduce good form into it in niggardly fashion. Lest we be disgraced for not knowing it, we must improve our whole style even a little. It is not necessary for all to perspire over rhymes, but all should know how to write correctly. But is it possible to demand of us correct style? The road to it through learning is closed. Just learn a few rules and write a Bova or Peter’s Golden Keys. The clerk says: “the writing here is gentle; if you want to be someone, just study diligently!” But my opinion is that although you may be someone, you will never be truly literate that way. Even in the best handwriting, with the clerk’s advice, weave four letters into the word “year” and learn to write “the end” fancifully – believe me, you will still never be a writer.

Learn from those, whether they be many or few, whose diligence rivaled art and showed them how savage this thought is that we do not possess a rich tongue. Be angry that we have few books, and lament, “Since there are no Russian books, who is there to imitate?” However, be angrier at yourself or at your father for his not having taught you. For if you had not passed your youth frivolously, you might have been sufficiently skilled in writing.

Имеем сверх того духовных много книг;

The industrious bee takes from everywhere what it needs for sweet honey, and, visiting the fragrant rose, takes into its honeycombs even little particles of manure. We have, moreover, many religious books. Who is responsible for your never having understood the Psalter? Running through it, like a vessel in a swift sea, you recklessly raced from one end to the other a hundred times. If custom has obliterated a “thou” or a “thither,”who requires you to introduce them again into the language? And what has remained unchanged from antiquity now may be prescribed by you everywhere. Do not think that our language is not what we read in books, which you and I call not Russian. It is the same one, and if it were different, which you think just because you do not understand it, then what would remain to the Russian language? Your thought is indeed far from the truth. Do not learn sciences if you never have any liking for them, but of course it is necessary to know how to express one’s thoughts.

“Ode on the Ascension of Elisaveta Petrovna” (1747) – Mikhail Lomonosov

Full Title: “Ode on the Day of the Ascension to the All-Russian Throne of Her Majesty the Empress Elisaveta Petrovna, the Year 1747”

И класы на полях желтеют;
Дерзают в море за тобою;

Delight of kings and earthly kingdoms,
Tranquility beloved by all,
The bliss of hamlets, shield of cities,
How fair and purposive you are!
About you flowers gaily blossom
And ears of corn in fields turn yellow.
with treasure laden ships set out
And dare the oceans with your favor,
With hand so bountiful you scatter
Your riches all about the earth.

Ты кроме той всего превыше;

The world’s great brilliant luminary
From its eternal heights shines down
On pearls, and gold and on porphyry,
On all the beauties of the earth,
And brings all lands within its sights,
And will on earth find nothing fairer
Than you and our Elizabeth;
Except for her, o’er all you tower.
Her soul is stiller than a zephyr;
Her countenance a paradise

Войне поставила конец;

When she upon the throne ascended
As God on High gave her the crown,
‘Twas she who brought you back to Russia
And put an end to further war.
Embracing you she kissed you warmly
And said: “I have my fill of triumphs,
For which a stream of blood has flown.
The Russians’ happiness delights me.
Their peace I would not give in barter
For all the West and all the East.”

To the divine lips of our monarch
This short speech was appropriate.
Oh, how deservedly extolled are
This day and this most blessed hour,
When as a result of joyous transfer
The walls of Peter’s city lifted
Applause and shouting to the stars!
When in your hands the cross you carried
And too onto the throne there with you
Your virtues’ comely retinue!

Достаток силы нашей мал;
Чрез яры волны порывает;
Он брег с весельем оставляет;

To find the right words to express them
Is too much for our meager strengths.
But we cannot restrain ourselves from
The joyous singing of your praise.
Your grace our spirit does embolden
And sets it on its course, as fair winds
Drive forward through the fiercest waves
The sailor traveling the oceans.
He leaves the shores behind with pleasure;
The stern flies fast through watery wombs.

И колебать престаньте свет;

Be quiet, burning sounds of conflict,
And end your rocking of the world,
For our Elizabeth in peace here
Permitted learning to be spread.
You, brazen winds, be not so bold as
To roar, but briefly trumpet loud
The lovely times we now enjoy.
O universe, take heed in silence:
This lyre enraptured has desire now
To summon great names of the past.

Себя прославить в наши дни;

From times most ancient the Creator,
By mortals feared for wondrous deeds,
Determined by His will almighty
Himself to glorify in our times.
To Russia did He send a person
Who was from days of yore unheard of.
Through all impediments he raised
His head with victories adorned,
And Russia trampled down by rudeness,
He raised to heaven with himself.

In bloody fields Mars was frightened,
Perceiving Peter with his sword,
And Neptune, trembling, was astonished
When Russian ensigns crossed his view.
In walls which suddenly grew stronger,
And circled now by handsome buildings,
The dubious Neva declared:
“Have I now lost my recollection
And strayed from that familiar pathway
By which I earlier had flowed?”

And then the blessed fields of learning
To Russia did extend their hands
Across the mountains, seas, and rivers,
And to this monarch they declared:
We are prepared with deepest fervor
To give unto the Russian people
The new fruits of the purest mind.
Unto himself the monarch calls them;
Already Russia is expecting
To see their beneficial work.

But oh, the cruel hands of fate struck!
This man, this cause of all our bliss,
Full worthy of a life eternal,
Snatched from our midst by jealous Fate
To our souls’ unendurable grief,
In deepest lamentation plunged us!
Perceiving echoes of our sobs,
Parnassus’ summits did moan also,
And with a wail the Muses guided
His pure soul unto heaven’s gates.

Сомненный их смущался путь;

In such great fitting lamentation
Their unsure path became confused,
And marching solemnly they wanted
Just to behold his grave and deeds.
But soon indeed the humble Catherine,
The only joy left after Peter,
Accepted them with bounteous hand.
Oh, if her life had but continued
The Seine together with its learning
Would have been shamed by our Neva!

Все холмы покрывают лики;

What luminosity encircles
Parnassus in its great distress?
Oh, how harmoniously thrums there
The sweetest voice of pleasant strings!
The hills with choruses are covered;
The vales with cries of joy resounded:
The great daughter of Tsar Peter
Exceeds her father’s benefactions,
Augments the Muses’ satisfaction,
And opens up the doors to joy.

И в поле весь свой век живет;

Indeed deserving of great praises
The leader is who can compare
The number of his frays to triumphs,
And lives his whole life in the field.
But all the soldiers subject to him
Share always in what praise he merits;
And noise from all sides in the ranks
Extinguishes resounding glory,
And the sad moaning of the vanquished
The thunder of her trumpets thwarts.

Где Волга, Днепр, где Обь течет;

To you alone and not to others
This glory, monarch, will accrue.
Oh, how your vast and great dominion
Will render gratitude to you!
Behold the highest mountain ranges;
Behold your fields’ broad expanses,
Where Volga, Ob, and Dnieper flow.
The riches that are hidden in them
Will be uncovered by the science
That blossoms by your benefaction.

Какими хвалится Индия;
Сие злату очистит жилу;

When He on high delivered over
To you in happy sovereignty
Such great expanse of territory,
Such treasures did he then reveal
Which India has won acclaim for.
But Russia needs for their extraction
The use of hands by science skilled.
This way will veins of gold be cleansed,
And even rocks will sense the power
Of fields of learning you brought in.

Твои взвевает знамена;

Although the far-off northern regions
Where Boreas with frozen wings
Invites you to unfurl your ensigns
Was covered by its usual snows,
The Lord among the icy mountains
Revealed His greatness by His wonders:
The Lena there of rapids pure,
Just like the Nile, brings peoples water,
And finally its both shores loses,
Resembling in its width the sea.

Ловящих крик не разгонял;
Охотник где не метил луком;

How many wonders are created
By nature unbeknown to men,
Where stand deep forests thickly crowded
With different kinds of animals;
Where in the splendor of cool shadows
The shouts of hunters have not scattered
The reindeers gamboling in flocks;
Where sportsmen have not aimed their arrows,
And farmers with the blows of axes
Have not alarmed the singing birds.

Oh, wide and open field where Muses
Can handsomely extend their path!
For them what is it we can offer
To your will’s magnanimity?
We will your gift praise to the heavens
And place a token of your bounties
Where sun ascends and the Amur
Midst verdant shores twists on its passage,
Desiring thusly to restore it
To your rule from Manchuria.

Премудрость тамо зиждет храм;

The curtain of eternal darkness
Is opened up to us by hope!
There knowledge raises up a temple
Where neither rules nor law exist.
Before it ignorance grows pallid.
The damp path of the fleet there whitens
And oceans hasten to make way.
The Russian Christopher Columbus
To unknown peoples hastens swiftly
Your many bounties to proclaim.

Реке подобен Океан;
Одежду нежныя весны;

There sown with multitudes of islands
The ocean like a river is;
Bedecked with heaven’s dark blue color,
The raven brings the peacock shame.
The clouds of different birds are flying,
Which by their many divers colors
Surpass the garb of tender spring.
Their food they find in fragrant woodlands
And bathe themselves in pleasant currents;
Stern winter is beyond their ken.

В верьхи Рифейски копиëм;
Которой там натура скрыла;

And now Minerva with her glance strikes
The summits of the Ural range;
Vast quantities of gold and silver
Flow out in their inheritance.
In fissures Pluto is downtrodden
That from the mountains his dear metal,
which nature there had kept concealed,
To Russian hands is given over.
And from the brilliance of the daylight
His gloomy countenance he turns.

O men of learning, whom our nation
Expects to come from its own womb,
And wishes to be not inferior
To those it calls from foreign lands,
Oh, may your days on earth be blessed!
Emboldened now be not reluctant
To show by all your ardent zeal
That Mother Russia can give birth to
Its own philosophers like Plato
And Newtons of brisk intellect.

В несчастной случай берегут;

The sciences the young mind nourish
And consolation bring the old;
In happy lives they bring adornment
And when misfortune strikes protect.
The comfort of domestic labors
And on far travels no encumbrance,
The sciences help everywhere.
In lonely desert or with people;
In solitude or city’s bustle;
In work or leisure sweet they are.

Против тебя восстать войною;

To you, O source of all our bounties,
O angel of our peaceful years!
The Lord above will be your helper
Against the pride of him who dares,
Consumed with envy for our calmness,
To take up arms and rise against you.
Almighty God will keep you safe
From harm on all the paths you travel,
And will your life in blessings equal
The number of your charities.
